History

The Sprawl Technology Library was created by Mowgli in 2023. This grew out of the fact that the technology section of the Sprawl Library was quickly growing at an alarming rate, and threatened to overflow the speculative fiction. It became clear that both collections could not be housed under the same small roof that is the Sprawl Library, so another building in the area was found which would allow for the technology materials to migrate, giving more space for the speculative fiction.

The building was purchased in the fall of 2022, and is current under renovation to hold not just the general books and papers, but in fact artifacts which hopefully have been rebuilt and are still working. It is hoped that the technology library will open sometime in 2025. The building itself had suffered a bit through its 30 years of the previous owners, and so a number of upgrades are required before it will be habitable. It is also a goal to eventually use climate control systems in the building which are more climate friendly.

Mission

The goal of the Sprawl Technology Library is to collect and preserve not only old published works and artifacts pertaining to technology but to also attempt to return them to functional status. Use of original parts is desired, but functionality is the primary goal and so it is likely that machines will include some newer non-original parts in their rebuild.

As part of preservation, a goal of the library is to digitize and preserve the works in their original forms where possible, and to allow local access to these digitized and physical resources. Due to copyright restrictions, the digital forms of works may only be used or accessed at the library itself.
